Kobe is a beautiful city rich with culture located in the Kansai region, south of Tokyo. It is a short 20-minute train ride from Osaka, and a 50-minute train ride from Kyoto, making it an incredibly accessible city. Fans of the hit series Fate are in for a treat, so let us go explore!
The Fate Series in Kitano, Kobe
The Fate/Stay Night series first began as a visual novel, and has subsequently spanned multiple hit anime and video game adaptations that continue to be loved worldwide. One such adaptation is the 2014 Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works anime adaptation of the game produced by studio Ufotable. Here in Kobe, you can find some of the locations of this popular series.
One of the main characters of the series is Rin Tohsaka, who is the partner of a servant simply known as “Archer”. Rin is a rich girl known for her strong personality, and the model serving as her home is known as the Uroko House, located in none other than Kobe!
You may be surprised to see such a Western-style home in the middle of Japan. Why is that the case? Many of the houses in the area of Kitano in Kobe were built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as the result of international trade routes in the Port of Kobe.
These houses are extremely well preserved to this day. It is a strange feeling, walking through Western-style mansions in Kobe, but this, too, is an important part of Japanese history.
We can see why this mansion inspired the creators of Fate, as it really exudes the elegance of Tohsaka Rin. Here, you can see the same living room from the series!

An annex building from the main house also features lovely paintings of Western style. The top floor is especially beautiful, offering a full view of Kobe city.
The area of Kitano also has many food stalls. We recommend something like Kobe Beef (a delicacy of the area!) and these delicious small cakes known as “mini castella”.
Kitano may be a more Western part of Kobe, but even here you will find traditional Japanese sites, such as a shrine. These omamori (protective charms) are sold depending on your birth month and its accompanying Chinese zodiac. Both locals and tourists love to buy these charms, and some make great souvenirs.
